Sauna
Dry heat · 5 to 15 min per round
Handcrafted barrel, fired with cinnamon wood. Your heart rate climbs the way it would on a brisk walk, and tight shoulders and legs let go.

Hot and cold therapy
Most people go round two or three times. Swap a sauna round for steam, or the plunge for magnesium, in whatever order suits you.
Dry heat · 5 to 15 min per round
Handcrafted barrel, fired with cinnamon wood. Your heart rate climbs the way it would on a brisk walk, and tight shoulders and legs let go.
Cold · 1 to 3 min
Filtered, monitored and temperature controlled every day. Cold triggers the surge that leaves you bright and alert for hours. Exhale as you enter.
Wet heat · 10 to 15 min per round
Total humidity, lower temperature. Gentler than the barrel but it soaks just as deep. A favourite after a salty morning in the water.
Mineral soak · 5 min to finish
Loaded with magnesium salts. This is the landing pad of the circuit, best kept as your last stop, where the ritual ends.

You do not have to follow this. It is the shape a round tends to take, and a reasonable place to start if you have never done contrast bathing before.

A quick rinse before the tubs.
Heat
5 to 15 min

Swap a barrel round for steam, or plunge for magnesium.
Contrast bathing has been ordinary daily life in Finland and across the Baltic for generations. Here is what it reliably does, without the overclaiming.
Heat raises blood flow to the muscle and makes tight tissue easier to move. A short plunge takes the edge off the soreness that shows up the day after surfing.
Heat opens your blood vessels, cold narrows them. Your heart rate in the sauna climbs to roughly what a brisk walk asks of it.
Cold water triggers a sharp adrenaline response. Most people come out of the plunge alert and level in a way that lasts into the evening.
A warm body cooling down is one of the signals sleep runs on. It is why regulars book the 6:30 or 8:00 slot.
Heat and cold are not for everyone. If you are pregnant, or being treated for a heart condition or blood pressure, ask your doctor before a first session.

Sold at reception
Heat rises, so the hottest air in the room is exactly where your head is. Your scalp takes it first, which is why the head feels uncomfortable before the body has properly sweated. Wool felt traps air and slows that down, so the lightheaded feeling that ends a round early arrives later and your hair dries out less.
3,000LKR
Ask for one when you check in for your session. They are not sold online.

Longer rounds and the top bench, where the air is hottest

Care
Hand wash cool, lay flat to dry, never wring or machine wash
A single circuit is LKR 6,000. If you are in Hiriketiya for more than a few days, a package brings that down. Packages work for the sauna and the spa both.
Unlimited plans include 10% off drinks & food and 20% off events & massages.
Buy it online and your package arrives on your phone with its own QR code. One package, one person.
Handcrafted on site and fired with cinnamon wood, not an imported cabin with an electric box in the corner.
Filtered continuously and temperature controlled, so it holds 3 to 8°C on a quiet Tuesday and a full Saturday alike.
You pick a start time, and after that nothing is timed. Go round as many times as ninety minutes allows.
Maha Mezze is directly above, over Hiriketiya. Most people finish and eat without leaving the building.
Nothing. They are two names for the same thing, and people search for both. At Maha Sauna it is one filtered, temperature controlled tub held between 3 and 8 degrees, a minute to three minutes at a time, straight after the sauna or the steam room.
A Full Circuit at Maha Sauna is LKR 6,000. That is 90 minutes with the barrel sauna, ice cold plunge, steam room and magnesium bath, water and towel included. Packages bring it down: three sessions for 16,000, ten for 45,000, a month unlimited for 60,000.
On Hiriketiya Beach Road in Dikwella, two minutes from the bay. Maha Sauna is Hiriketiya's only barrel sauna and ice bath, and the only place on the south coast with sauna, ice bath and a restaurant under one roof.
Between 3 and 8°C. The plunge is filtered continuously and temperature controlled, so it is the same cold on a quiet Tuesday as on a full Saturday. One to three minutes is plenty.
Above 60°C. The barrel was built by hand on site and is fired with cinnamon wood. Five to fifteen minutes per round, two or three rounds in a session.
It is the most common reason people come. Deep heat loosens tight shoulders, hips and legs after a session in the water, and a short plunge afterwards takes the edge off next-day soreness. Hiriketiya, Dikwella and Mirissa surfers use it as a recovery stop.
Walk-ins are welcome and usually fine. Sunset and weekends fill up, so message or reserve ahead if you want a specific time.
