A therapist working on a guest's hand and wrist at Maha Sauna

Massage and hammam

Massage and Moroccan hammam, a few steps from the sand.

The signature: Moroccan hammam.

Packages are shared with the sauna, so a package you already hold works here too.

The long one

Moroccan Hammam + full body massage

A full body scrub in the steam of the hammam, rinsed off, then a full hour on the table. It is the treatment to pick when you have the afternoon free and want to leave feeling like a different person.

  1. 1

Steam first. You soften in the heat of the hammam until the skin gives.

  2. 2

Full body scrub. Worked over properly, then rinsed off warm.

  3. 3

An hour on the table. Full body massage while you are already loose.

What you get here that you do not get elsewhere.

Twenty years on the table

Our therapists have two decades of hands on experience. They read tension rather than following a script, and adjust pressure as they go.

Noise cancelling headphones

Music and nothing else. The road, the kitchen and the rest of the building disappear, which is the difference between a nice massage and properly letting go.

Oils that suit the work

Natural oils chosen for the treatment, warmed before they reach you, so the hands move without dragging.

Packages cover the spa too

The same packages that get you into the sauna work here. If you already hold one, treatments come out of it.

How a treatment goes.

  1. 1

    A short conversation first

Where it hurts, how much pressure you want, anything to avoid. Two minutes, and it changes the whole hour.

  2. 2

    Headphones on

Music, and the rest of the building gone. Say so if you would rather have quiet.

  3. 3

    The work itself

Pressure and pace adjust as your therapist finds what is tight. Speak up at any point and it changes.

  4. 4

    Water, then upstairs

Take a few minutes before you stand up. Maha Mezze is one floor above if you want to sit with the view.

What a massage actually does.

Straightforwardly, without the claims about flushing toxins. Here is what the hour is doing to you.

Tension lets go

Sustained pressure on a tight muscle helps it release and makes the surrounding joint easier to move. Shoulders, lower back and hips are where most people carry it.

Circulation improves locally

Working the tissue brings blood to the area, which is part of why a worked muscle feels warmer and looser afterwards.

The nervous system settles

Slow, predictable touch shifts the body out of its alert state. That is the actual mechanism behind the calm people describe afterwards.

Sleep usually follows

An evening treatment tends to carry straight into a good night. Book late if sleep is what you are after.

If you are pregnant, recovering from an injury, or being treated for a medical condition, say so when you book and mention it again to your therapist.

Packages work here too.

The packages are shared between the sauna and the spa, so if you are staying in Hiriketiya for a while, one package covers both.

Unlimited plans include 10% off drinks & food and 20% off events & massages.

Questions before you book.

What is the difference between a hammam and a massage?

A Moroccan hammam runs 90 minutes and starts in the steam room, where your body is scrubbed heavily with soap and oils before being rinsed. A massage is hands on the table only, and runs 30, 60 or 90 minutes depending on what you book. The hammam at Maha Sauna includes a full hour of massage after the scrub.

How long is a massage in Hiriketiya at Maha Sauna?

Thirty minutes for a targeted massage on the head, neck and back, one hour for a full body massage, or 90 minutes for a full body massage with red light therapy, or for the hammam.

Do I need to book a massage in advance?

You can drop in and ask, but booking is better. A treatment needs a therapist free for the whole hour, so walk ins depend on what is already on the day.

What should I wear for a hammam or massage?

Swimwear. The hammam takes place in the steam room and involves a full body scrub, so bring what you would wear for the sauna. Everything else is provided.

Can I combine a massage with the sauna and ice bath?

Yes. Ask at reception and they will set the timing so you go through the circuit and onto the table without waiting around. Packages are shared between the sauna and the spa.

Where can I get a massage in Hiriketiya?

At Maha Sauna on Hiriketiya Beach Road in Dikwella, downstairs under Maha Mezze. Full body massage, targeted massage, facials, red light therapy and a Moroccan hammam, with therapists who have twenty years of experience.

Ninety minutes that will change your week.

The only sauna, ice bath and restaurant under one roof on the south coast. Heat and ice downstairs, treatments in the same building, and Maha Mezze one floor up when you are done.
